How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 97 = 67.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 67.9 ÷ 97 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/97, so part = 70 × 97 ÷ 100 = 67.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*97. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

67.9 is the 70% share of 97. The remaining 30% is 29.1, and the two parts add back up to 97.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $97 saves $67.9, so you pay $29.1.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 97 by 70% gives 164.9 and decreasing it by 70% gives 29.1. These do not cancel out: raising 97 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 49.47, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
