How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 98 = 68.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 68.6 ÷ 98 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/98, so part = 70 × 98 ÷ 100 = 68.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*98. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

68.6 is the 70% share of 98. The remaining 30% is 29.4, and the two parts add back up to 98.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $98 saves $68.6, so you pay $29.4.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 98 by 70% gives 166.6 and decreasing it by 70% gives 29.4. These do not cancel out: raising 98 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 49.98, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
