How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 98 ÷ 100 = 0.98
  2. Multiply: 0.98 × 70 = 68.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 68.6 ÷ 70 × 100 = 98%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 98/100 = part/70, so part = 98 × 70 ÷ 100 = 68.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =98%*70. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

68.6 is the 98% share of 70. The remaining 2% is 1.4, and the two parts add back up to 70.

Discounts: 98% off an item priced $70 saves $68.6, so you pay $1.4.

Adding and taking away 98%

Increasing 70 by 98% gives 138.6 and decreasing it by 98% gives 1.4. These do not cancel out: raising 70 by 98% and then lowering the result by 98% ends at 2.772, because the second 98% is taken of a bigger number.
