How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 700 ÷ 100 = 7
- Multiply: 7 × 5 = 35
- Check: Work backwards: 35 ÷ 5 × 100 = 700%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 700/100 = part/5, so part = 700 × 5 ÷ 100 = 35. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =700%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 700% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 5: it is 7 times 5.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 700% of its $5 cost means selling it for $35.
Adding and taking away 700%
Increasing 5 by 700% gives 40. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 700% and then lowering the result by 700% ends at -240, because the second 700% is taken of a bigger number.
