How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75
  2. Multiply: 0.75 × 1 = 0.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.75 ÷ 1 × 100 = 75%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 75/100 = part/1, so part = 75 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =75%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.75 is the 75% share of 1. The remaining 25% is 0.25, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 75% off an item priced $1 saves $0.75, so you pay $0.25.

Adding and taking away 75%

Increasing 1 by 75% gives 1.75 and decreasing it by 75% gives 0.25. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 75% and then lowering the result by 75% ends at 0.4375, because the second 75% is taken of a bigger number.
