How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 75 = 0.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.75 ÷ 75 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/75, so part = 1 × 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*75. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.75 is the 1% share of 75. The remaining 99% is 74.25, and the two parts add back up to 75.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $75 saves $0.75, so you pay $74.25.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 75 by 1% gives 75.75 and decreasing it by 1% gives 74.25. These do not cancel out: raising 75 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 74.9925, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
