How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75
- Multiply: 0.75 × 120 = 90
- Check: Work backwards: 90 ÷ 120 × 100 = 75%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 75/100 = part/120, so part = 75 × 120 ÷ 100 = 90. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =75%*120. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
90 is the 75% share of 120. The remaining 25% is 30, and the two parts add back up to 120.
Discounts: 75% off an item priced $120 saves $90, so you pay $30.
Adding and taking away 75%
Increasing 120 by 75% gives 210 and decreasing it by 75% gives 30. These do not cancel out: raising 120 by 75% and then lowering the result by 75% ends at 52.5, because the second 75% is taken of a bigger number.
