How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75
  2. Multiply: 0.75 × 32 = 24
  3. Check: Work backwards: 24 ÷ 32 × 100 = 75%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 75/100 = part/32, so part = 75 × 32 ÷ 100 = 24. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =75%*32. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

24 is the 75% share of 32. The remaining 25% is 8, and the two parts add back up to 32.

Discounts: 75% off an item priced $32 saves $24, so you pay $8.

Adding and taking away 75%

Increasing 32 by 75% gives 56 and decreasing it by 75% gives 8. These do not cancel out: raising 32 by 75% and then lowering the result by 75% ends at 14, because the second 75% is taken of a bigger number.
