How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75
  2. Multiply: 0.75 × 4 = 3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3 ÷ 4 × 100 = 75%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 75/100 = part/4, so part = 75 × 4 ÷ 100 = 3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =75%*4. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3 is the 75% share of 4. The remaining 25% is 1, and the two parts add back up to 4.

Discounts: 75% off an item priced $4 saves $3, so you pay $1.

Adding and taking away 75%

Increasing 4 by 75% gives 7 and decreasing it by 75% gives 1. These do not cancel out: raising 4 by 75% and then lowering the result by 75% ends at 1.75, because the second 75% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 4% of 75. 75% of 4 and 4% of 75 are always equal (both are 75 × 4 ÷ 100 = 3), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
