How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 75 = 3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3 ÷ 75 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/75, so part = 4 × 75 ÷ 100 = 3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*75. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3 is the 4% share of 75. The remaining 96% is 72, and the two parts add back up to 75.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $75 saves $3, so you pay $72.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 75 by 4% gives 78 and decreasing it by 4% gives 72. These do not cancel out: raising 75 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 74.88, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 75% of 4. 4% of 75 and 75% of 4 are always equal (both are 4 × 75 ÷ 100 = 3), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
