How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75
  2. Multiply: 0.75 × 64 = 48
  3. Check: Work backwards: 48 ÷ 64 × 100 = 75%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 75/100 = part/64, so part = 75 × 64 ÷ 100 = 48. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =75%*64. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

48 is the 75% share of 64. The remaining 25% is 16, and the two parts add back up to 64.

Discounts: 75% off an item priced $64 saves $48, so you pay $16.

Adding and taking away 75%

Increasing 64 by 75% gives 112 and decreasing it by 75% gives 16. These do not cancel out: raising 64 by 75% and then lowering the result by 75% ends at 28, because the second 75% is taken of a bigger number.
