How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 78 ÷ 100 = 0.78
  2. Multiply: 0.78 × 80 = 62.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 62.4 ÷ 80 × 100 = 78%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 78/100 = part/80, so part = 78 × 80 ÷ 100 = 62.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =78%*80. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

62.4 is the 78% share of 80. The remaining 22% is 17.6, and the two parts add back up to 80.

Discounts: 78% off an item priced $80 saves $62.4, so you pay $17.6.

Adding and taking away 78%

Increasing 80 by 78% gives 142.4 and decreasing it by 78% gives 17.6. These do not cancel out: raising 80 by 78% and then lowering the result by 78% ends at 31.328, because the second 78% is taken of a bigger number.
