How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 8 ÷ 100 = 0.08
- Multiply: 0.08 × 90 = 7.2
- Check: Work backwards: 7.2 ÷ 90 × 100 = 8%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 8/100 = part/90, so part = 8 × 90 ÷ 100 = 7.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =8%*90. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
7.2 is the 8% share of 90. The remaining 92% is 82.8, and the two parts add back up to 90.
Discounts: 8% off an item priced $90 saves $7.2, so you pay $82.8.
Adding and taking away 8%
Increasing 90 by 8% gives 97.2 and decreasing it by 8% gives 82.8. These do not cancel out: raising 90 by 8% and then lowering the result by 8% ends at 89.424, because the second 8% is taken of a bigger number.
