How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
- Multiply: 0.8 × 12 = 9.6
- Check: Work backwards: 9.6 ÷ 12 × 100 = 80%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/12, so part = 80 × 12 ÷ 100 = 9.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =80%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
9.6 is the 80% share of 12. The remaining 20% is 2.4, and the two parts add back up to 12.
Discounts: 80% off an item priced $12 saves $9.6, so you pay $2.4.
Adding and taking away 80%
Increasing 12 by 80% gives 21.6 and decreasing it by 80% gives 2.4. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 4.32, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.
