How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
- Multiply: 0.12 × 80 = 9.6
- Check: Work backwards: 9.6 ÷ 80 × 100 = 12%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/80, so part = 12 × 80 ÷ 100 = 9.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =12%*80. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
9.6 is the 12% share of 80. The remaining 88% is 70.4, and the two parts add back up to 80.
Discounts: 12% off an item priced $80 saves $9.6, so you pay $70.4.
Adding and taking away 12%
Increasing 80 by 12% gives 89.6 and decreasing it by 12% gives 70.4. These do not cancel out: raising 80 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 78.848, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 80% of 12. 12% of 80 and 80% of 12 are always equal (both are 12 × 80 ÷ 100 = 9.6), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
