How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
- Multiply: 0.8 × 3 = 2.4
- Check: Work backwards: 2.4 ÷ 3 × 100 = 80%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/3, so part = 80 × 3 ÷ 100 = 2.4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =80%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.4 is the 80% share of 3. The remaining 20% is 0.6, and the two parts add back up to 3.
Discounts: 80% off an item priced $3 saves $2.4, so you pay $0.6.
Adding and taking away 80%
Increasing 3 by 80% gives 5.4 and decreasing it by 80% gives 0.6. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 1.08, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 3% of 80. 80% of 3 and 3% of 80 are always equal (both are 80 × 3 ÷ 100 = 2.4), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
