How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 80 = 28
  3. Check: Work backwards: 28 ÷ 80 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/80, so part = 35 × 80 ÷ 100 = 28. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*80. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

28 is the 35% share of 80. The remaining 65% is 52, and the two parts add back up to 80.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $80 saves $28, so you pay $52.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 80 by 35% gives 108 and decreasing it by 35% gives 52. These do not cancel out: raising 80 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 70.2, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
