How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
- Multiply: 0.8 × 59 = 47.2
- Check: Work backwards: 47.2 ÷ 59 × 100 = 80%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/59, so part = 80 × 59 ÷ 100 = 47.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =80%*59. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
47.2 is the 80% share of 59. The remaining 20% is 11.8, and the two parts add back up to 59.
Discounts: 80% off an item priced $59 saves $47.2, so you pay $11.8.
Adding and taking away 80%
Increasing 59 by 80% gives 106.2 and decreasing it by 80% gives 11.8. These do not cancel out: raising 59 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 21.24, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.
