How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
  2. Multiply: 0.8 × 72 = 57.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 57.6 ÷ 72 × 100 = 80%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/72, so part = 80 × 72 ÷ 100 = 57.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =80%*72. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

57.6 is the 80% share of 72. The remaining 20% is 14.4, and the two parts add back up to 72.

Discounts: 80% off an item priced $72 saves $57.6, so you pay $14.4.

Adding and taking away 80%

Increasing 72 by 80% gives 129.6 and decreasing it by 80% gives 14.4. These do not cancel out: raising 72 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 25.92, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.
