How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
- Multiply: 0.09 × 25 = 2.25
- Check: Work backwards: 2.25 ÷ 25 × 100 = 9%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/25, so part = 9 × 25 ÷ 100 = 2.25. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =9%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.25 is the 9% share of 25. The remaining 91% is 22.75, and the two parts add back up to 25.
Discounts: 9% off an item priced $25 saves $2.25, so you pay $22.75.
Adding and taking away 9%
Increasing 25 by 9% gives 27.25 and decreasing it by 9% gives 22.75. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 24.7975, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.
