How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
  2. Multiply: 0.09 × 30 = 2.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.7 ÷ 30 × 100 = 9%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/30, so part = 9 × 30 ÷ 100 = 2.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =9%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.7 is the 9% share of 30. The remaining 91% is 27.3, and the two parts add back up to 30.

Discounts: 9% off an item priced $30 saves $2.7, so you pay $27.3.

Adding and taking away 9%

Increasing 30 by 9% gives 32.7 and decreasing it by 9% gives 27.3. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 29.757, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.
