How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
  2. Multiply: 0.09 × 45 = 4.05
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.05 ÷ 45 × 100 = 9%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/45, so part = 9 × 45 ÷ 100 = 4.05. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =9%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.05 is the 9% share of 45. The remaining 91% is 40.95, and the two parts add back up to 45.

Discounts: 9% off an item priced $45 saves $4.05, so you pay $40.95.

Adding and taking away 9%

Increasing 45 by 9% gives 49.05 and decreasing it by 9% gives 40.95. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 44.6355, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.
