How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
  2. Multiply: 0.09 × 5 = 0.45
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.45 ÷ 5 × 100 = 9%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/5, so part = 9 × 5 ÷ 100 = 0.45. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =9%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.45 is the 9% share of 5. The remaining 91% is 4.55, and the two parts add back up to 5.

Discounts: 9% off an item priced $5 saves $0.45, so you pay $4.55.

Adding and taking away 9%

Increasing 5 by 9% gives 5.45 and decreasing it by 9% gives 4.55. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 4.9595, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.
