How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
  2. Multiply: 0.09 × 55 = 4.95
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.95 ÷ 55 × 100 = 9%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/55, so part = 9 × 55 ÷ 100 = 4.95. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =9%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.95 is the 9% share of 55. The remaining 91% is 50.05, and the two parts add back up to 55.

Discounts: 9% off an item priced $55 saves $4.95, so you pay $50.05.

Adding and taking away 9%

Increasing 55 by 9% gives 59.95 and decreasing it by 9% gives 50.05. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 54.5545, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.
