How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 95 ÷ 100 = 0.95
  2. Multiply: 0.95 × 8 = 7.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.6 ÷ 8 × 100 = 95%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 95/100 = part/8, so part = 95 × 8 ÷ 100 = 7.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =95%*8. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.6 is the 95% share of 8. The remaining 5% is 0.4, and the two parts add back up to 8.

Discounts: 95% off an item priced $8 saves $7.6, so you pay $0.4.

Adding and taking away 95%

Increasing 8 by 95% gives 15.6 and decreasing it by 95% gives 0.4. These do not cancel out: raising 8 by 95% and then lowering the result by 95% ends at 0.78, because the second 95% is taken of a bigger number.
