How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 97 ÷ 100 = 0.97
  2. Multiply: 0.97 × 100 = 97
  3. Check: Work backwards: 97 ÷ 100 × 100 = 97%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 97/100 = part/100, so part = 97 × 100 ÷ 100 = 97. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =97%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

97 is the 97% share of 100. The remaining 3% is 3, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 97% off an item priced $100 saves $97, so you pay $3.

Adding and taking away 97%

Increasing 100 by 97% gives 197 and decreasing it by 97% gives 3. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 97% and then lowering the result by 97% ends at 5.91, because the second 97% is taken of a bigger number.
