How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 97 ÷ 100 = 0.97
- Multiply: 0.97 × 2 = 1.94
- Check: Work backwards: 1.94 ÷ 2 × 100 = 97%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 97/100 = part/2, so part = 97 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.94. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =97%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.94 is the 97% share of 2. The remaining 3% is 0.06, and the two parts add back up to 2.
Discounts: 97% off an item priced $2 saves $1.94, so you pay $0.06.
Adding and taking away 97%
Increasing 2 by 97% gives 3.94 and decreasing it by 97% gives 0.06. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 97% and then lowering the result by 97% ends at 0.1182, because the second 97% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 97. 97% of 2 and 2% of 97 are always equal (both are 97 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.94), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
