How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 98 ÷ 100 = 0.98
  2. Multiply: 0.98 × 20 = 19.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 19.6 ÷ 20 × 100 = 98%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 98/100 = part/20, so part = 98 × 20 ÷ 100 = 19.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =98%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

19.6 is the 98% share of 20. The remaining 2% is 0.4, and the two parts add back up to 20.

Discounts: 98% off an item priced $20 saves $19.6, so you pay $0.4.

Adding and taking away 98%

Increasing 20 by 98% gives 39.6 and decreasing it by 98% gives 0.4. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 98% and then lowering the result by 98% ends at 0.792, because the second 98% is taken of a bigger number.
