How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 99 ÷ 100 = 0.99
- Multiply: 0.99 × 1 = 0.99
- Check: Work backwards: 0.99 ÷ 1 × 100 = 99%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 99/100 = part/1, so part = 99 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.99. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =99%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.99 is the 99% share of 1. The remaining 1% is 0.01, and the two parts add back up to 1.
Discounts: 99% off an item priced $1 saves $0.99, so you pay $0.01.
Adding and taking away 99%
Increasing 1 by 99% gives 1.99 and decreasing it by 99% gives 0.01. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 99% and then lowering the result by 99% ends at 0.0199, because the second 99% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 1% of 99. 99% of 1 and 1% of 99 are always equal (both are 99 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.99), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
