How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 99 ÷ 100 = 0.99
  2. Multiply: 0.99 × 55 = 54.45
  3. Check: Work backwards: 54.45 ÷ 55 × 100 = 99%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 99/100 = part/55, so part = 99 × 55 ÷ 100 = 54.45. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =99%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

54.45 is the 99% share of 55. The remaining 1% is 0.55, and the two parts add back up to 55.

Discounts: 99% off an item priced $55 saves $54.45, so you pay $0.55.

Adding and taking away 99%

Increasing 55 by 99% gives 109.45 and decreasing it by 99% gives 0.55. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 99% and then lowering the result by 99% ends at 1.0945, because the second 99% is taken of a bigger number.
