How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Divide the part by it: 40 ÷ 0.1 = 400
  3. Check: Work forwards: 10% of 400 is 0.1 × 400 = 40.

Another method. As a proportion: 40/whole = 10/100, so whole = 40 × 100 ÷ 10 = 400. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40/10%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

40 is the 10% share of 400. The other 90% is 360.

Discounts: if 40 dollars is a 10% saving, the original price was $400.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 10% is 40, then 1% is 40 ÷ 10 = 4, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 40, 50% is 200 and 100% is 400.
