How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
  2. Divide the part by it: 80 ÷ 0.5 = 160
  3. Check: Work forwards: 50% of 160 is 0.5 × 160 = 80.

Another method. As a proportion: 80/whole = 50/100, so whole = 80 × 100 ÷ 50 = 160. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =80/50%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

80 is the 50% share of 160. The other 50% is 80.

Discounts: if 80 dollars is a 50% saving, the original price was $160.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 50% is 80, then 1% is 80 ÷ 50 = 1.6, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 16, 50% is 80 and 100% is 160.
