How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
  2. Divide the part by it: 10 ÷ 0.5 = 20
  3. Check: Work forwards: 50% of 20 is 0.5 × 20 = 10.

Another method. As a proportion: 10/whole = 50/100, so whole = 10 × 100 ÷ 50 = 20. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10/50%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

10 is the 50% share of 20. The other 50% is 10.

Discounts: if 10 dollars is a 50% saving, the original price was $20.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 50% is 10, then 1% is 10 ÷ 50 = 0.2, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 2, 50% is 10 and 100% is 20.
