How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 30 ÷ 100 = 0.3
  2. Divide the part by it: 30 ÷ 0.3 = 100
  3. Check: Work forwards: 30% of 100 is 0.3 × 100 = 30.

Another method. As a proportion: 30/whole = 30/100, so whole = 30 × 100 ÷ 30 = 100. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =30/30%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

30 is the 30% share of 100. The other 70% is 70.

Discounts: if 30 dollars is a 30% saving, the original price was $100.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 30% is 30, then 1% is 30 ÷ 30 = 1, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 10, 50% is 50 and 100% is 100.
