How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 30 ÷ 100 = 0.3
  2. Divide the part by it: 60 ÷ 0.3 = 200
  3. Check: Work forwards: 30% of 200 is 0.3 × 200 = 60.

Another method. As a proportion: 60/whole = 30/100, so whole = 60 × 100 ÷ 30 = 200. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60/30%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

60 is the 30% share of 200. The other 70% is 140.

Discounts: if 60 dollars is a 30% saving, the original price was $200.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 30% is 60, then 1% is 60 ÷ 30 = 2, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 20, 50% is 100 and 100% is 200.
