How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Divide the part by it: 100 ÷ 0.4 = 250
  3. Check: Work forwards: 40% of 250 is 0.4 × 250 = 100.

Another method. As a proportion: 100/whole = 40/100, so whole = 100 × 100 ÷ 40 = 250. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =100/40%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

100 is the 40% share of 250. The other 60% is 150.

Discounts: if 100 dollars is a 40% saving, the original price was $250.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 40% is 100, then 1% is 100 ÷ 40 = 2.5, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 25, 50% is 125 and 100% is 250.
