How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
  2. Divide the part by it: 5 ÷ 0.5 = 10
  3. Check: Work forwards: 50% of 10 is 0.5 × 10 = 5.

Another method. As a proportion: 5/whole = 50/100, so whole = 5 × 100 ÷ 50 = 10. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =5/50%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

5 is the 50% share of 10. The other 50% is 5.

Discounts: if 5 dollars is a 50% saving, the original price was $10.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 50% is 5, then 1% is 5 ÷ 50 = 0.1, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 1, 50% is 5 and 100% is 10.
