How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05
- Divide the part by it: 50 ÷ 0.05 = 1,000
- Check: Work forwards: 5% of 1,000 is 0.05 × 1,000 = 50.
Another method. As a proportion: 50/whole = 5/100, so whole = 50 × 100 ÷ 5 = 1,000. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =50/5%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.
What the result means
50 is the 5% share of 1,000. The other 95% is 950.
Discounts: if 50 dollars is a 5% saving, the original price was $1,000.
Using 1% as a stepping stone
If 5% is 50, then 1% is 50 ÷ 5 = 10, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 100, 50% is 500 and 100% is 1,000.
