How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Divide the part by it: 40 ÷ 0.25 = 160
  3. Check: Work forwards: 25% of 160 is 0.25 × 160 = 40.

Another method. As a proportion: 40/whole = 25/100, so whole = 40 × 100 ÷ 25 = 160. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40/25%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.
