How to work it out
- Work out the discount: 15% of 20 = 0.15 × 20 = 3
- Take it off the price: 20 − 3 = 17
- Check: Add the saving back: 17 + 3 = 20.
Another method. In one step: you pay 85% of the price, so 0.85 × 20 = 17. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =20*(1-15%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.
What the result means
After 15% off, you pay 85% of the price: 17 instead of 20, a saving of 3.
Shopping: an item marked $20 with 15% off costs $17 at the till, before any sales tax.
Stacked discounts
15% off followed by another 15% off is 27.75% off in total, not 30%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 15% of 20. Two discounts do not add up: 15% off and then another 15% off leaves 14.45, not 14, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
