How to work it out

  1. Work out the discount: 20% of 20 = 0.2 × 20 = 4
  2. Take it off the price: 20 − 4 = 16
  3. Check: Add the saving back: 16 + 4 = 20.

Another method. In one step: you pay 80% of the price, so 0.8 × 20 = 16. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =20*(1-20%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.

What the result means

After 20% off, you pay 80% of the price: 16 instead of 20, a saving of 4.

Shopping: an item marked $20 with 20% off costs $16 at the till, before any sales tax.

Stacked discounts

20% off followed by another 20% off is 36% off in total, not 40%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 20% of 20. Two discounts do not add up: 20% off and then another 20% off leaves 12.8, not 12, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
