How to work it out

  1. Work out the discount: 5% of 100 = 0.05 × 100 = 5
  2. Take it off the price: 100 − 5 = 95
  3. Check: Add the saving back: 95 + 5 = 100.

Another method. In one step: you pay 95% of the price, so 0.95 × 100 = 95. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =100*(1-5%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.

What the result means

After 5% off, you pay 95% of the price: 95 instead of 100, a saving of 5.

Shopping: an item marked $100 with 5% off costs $95 at the till, before any sales tax.

Stacked discounts

5% off followed by another 5% off is 9.75% off in total, not 10%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 5% of 100. Two discounts do not add up: 5% off and then another 5% off leaves 90.25, not 90, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
