How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 30 = 0.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.3 ÷ 30 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/30, so part = 1 × 30 ÷ 100 = 0.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.3 is the 1% share of 30. The remaining 99% is 29.7, and the two parts add back up to 30.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $30 saves $0.3, so you pay $29.7.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 30 by 1% gives 30.3 and decreasing it by 1% gives 29.7. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 29.997, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 30% of 1. 1% of 30 and 30% of 1 are always equal (both are 1 × 30 ÷ 100 = 0.3), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
