How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
- Multiply: 0.01 × 36 = 0.36
- Check: Work backwards: 0.36 ÷ 36 × 100 = 1%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/36, so part = 1 × 36 ÷ 100 = 0.36. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =1%*36. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.36 is the 1% share of 36. The remaining 99% is 35.64, and the two parts add back up to 36.
Discounts: 1% off an item priced $36 saves $0.36, so you pay $35.64.
Adding and taking away 1%
Increasing 36 by 1% gives 36.36 and decreasing it by 1% gives 35.64. These do not cancel out: raising 36 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 35.9964, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 36% of 1. 1% of 36 and 36% of 1 are always equal (both are 1 × 36 ÷ 100 = 0.36), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
