How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 54 = 0.54
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.54 ÷ 54 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/54, so part = 1 × 54 ÷ 100 = 0.54. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*54. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.54 is the 1% share of 54. The remaining 99% is 53.46, and the two parts add back up to 54.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $54 saves $0.54, so you pay $53.46.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 54 by 1% gives 54.54 and decreasing it by 1% gives 53.46. These do not cancel out: raising 54 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 53.9946, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
