How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
- Multiply: 0.01 × 56 = 0.56
- Check: Work backwards: 0.56 ÷ 56 × 100 = 1%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/56, so part = 1 × 56 ÷ 100 = 0.56. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =1%*56. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.56 is the 1% share of 56. The remaining 99% is 55.44, and the two parts add back up to 56.
Discounts: 1% off an item priced $56 saves $0.56, so you pay $55.44.
Adding and taking away 1%
Increasing 56 by 1% gives 56.56 and decreasing it by 1% gives 55.44. These do not cancel out: raising 56 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 55.9944, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 56% of 1. 1% of 56 and 56% of 1 are always equal (both are 1 × 56 ÷ 100 = 0.56), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
