How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 56 ÷ 100 = 0.56
- Multiply: 0.56 × 1 = 0.56
- Check: Work backwards: 0.56 ÷ 1 × 100 = 56%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 56/100 = part/1, so part = 56 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.56. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =56%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.56 is the 56% share of 1. The remaining 44% is 0.44, and the two parts add back up to 1.
Discounts: 56% off an item priced $1 saves $0.56, so you pay $0.44.
Adding and taking away 56%
Increasing 1 by 56% gives 1.56 and decreasing it by 56% gives 0.44. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 56% and then lowering the result by 56% ends at 0.6864, because the second 56% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 1% of 56. 56% of 1 and 1% of 56 are always equal (both are 56 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.56), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
