How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 58 = 0.58
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.58 ÷ 58 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/58, so part = 1 × 58 ÷ 100 = 0.58. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*58. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.58 is the 1% share of 58. The remaining 99% is 57.42, and the two parts add back up to 58.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $58 saves $0.58, so you pay $57.42.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 58 by 1% gives 58.58 and decreasing it by 1% gives 57.42. These do not cancel out: raising 58 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 57.9942, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
