How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 24 = 2.4
- Check: Work backwards: 2.4 ÷ 24 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/24, so part = 10 × 24 ÷ 100 = 2.4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*24. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.4 is the 10% share of 24. The remaining 90% is 21.6, and the two parts add back up to 24.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $24 saves $2.4, so you pay $21.6.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 24 by 10% gives 26.4 and decreasing it by 10% gives 21.6. These do not cancel out: raising 24 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 23.76, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 24% of 10. 10% of 24 and 24% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 24 ÷ 100 = 2.4), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
