How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 56 = 5.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.6 ÷ 56 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/56, so part = 10 × 56 ÷ 100 = 5.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*56. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.6 is the 10% share of 56. The remaining 90% is 50.4, and the two parts add back up to 56.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $56 saves $5.6, so you pay $50.4.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 56 by 10% gives 61.6 and decreasing it by 10% gives 50.4. These do not cancel out: raising 56 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 55.44, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
